Valerian Lozenges Formulation As a Natural Anxiolytic
The present study focuses on the formulation and evaluation of herbal lozenges containing
Valerian Root Extract for anxiolytic and sleep-inducing effects. Anxiety and sleep disorders are
among the most common neurological conditions affecting the quality of life of individuals
worldwide. Herbal medicines have gained significant attention due to their safety, patient
compliance, and reduced adverse effects compared to synthetic drugs. Valerian root contains
active constituents such as valerenic acid and valepotriates, which exhibit sedative, calming, and
sleep-promoting activities through modulation of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA)
neurotransmission.
The objective of the present work was to formulate palatable and stable hard lozenges containing
valerian root extract and to evaluate their physicochemical properties and therapeutic potential.
The lozenges were prepared using the heating and congealing method with suitable excipients
including sucrose, liquid glucose, citric acid, menthol, flavoring agents, and preservatives. The
prepared formulations were evaluated for various parameters such as appearance, weight
variation, hardness, thickness, friability, pH, drug content uniformity, disintegration time,
dissolution profile, and mouth-dissolving characteristics.
The formulated lozenges showed acceptable organoleptic properties with satisfactory hardness,
low friability, uniform drug distribution, and appropriate dissolution behavior. The presence of
valerian root extract provided a soothing effect and may help in reducing anxiety and promoting
restful sleep. The study concluded that valerian lozenges can serve as a convenient, effective, and
patient-friendly herbal dosage form for anxiolytic and sleep-inducing therapy.
