To satisfy the varying power requirements of electric vehicle (EV) charging, an interleaved converter architecture integrated with an energy management framework is developed. The proposed power conversion and control scheme effectively coordinates the available energy resources and minimizes reliance on the utility grid, particularly during periods of high electricity demand. As a result, the charging system helps reduce the burden on the grid during peak operating hours.
A Rule-Based Energy Management Strategy (REMS) is implemented to maintain stable and efficient system performance. The strategy prioritizes the utilization of energy generated from the photovoltaic (PV) system. When PV generation is insufficient, the Battery Storage System (BSS) is employed to provide the required supplementary power, while the grid serves as a backup source during prolonged fluctuations in solar generation. This coordinated approach ensures continuous charging operation, enhances the use of renewable energy, satisfies EV load requirements, and supports longer battery life.
This thesis presents a hybrid EV charging infrastructure that integrates a PV array, a BSS, and the conventional utility grid. To enhance power conversion efficiency and output quality, interleaved buck–boost converters are adopted in the charging stage. Furthermore, the State of Charge (SoC) of the lithium-ion battery is estimated using an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF)-based algorithm. An online energy management scheme is also proposed to increase renewable energy penetration, reduce grid dependency, and improve the operational effectiveness of the battery storage system.
