A STUDY TO ASSESS THE EFFECTIVENESS OF STRUCTURED TEACHING PROGRAM ON KNOWLEDGE REGARDING PREVENTION OF VECTOR BORNE DISEASE AMONG SCHOOL CHILDREN AT SELECTED SCHOOL, CHENNAI.

Vector-borne diseases remain a major public health concern, particularly among children in developing countries. The present study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a structured teaching programme on knowledge regarding prevention of vector-borne diseases among school children aged 6–17 years at Avvai Home TVR Girls Higher Secondary School, Chennai. An evaluative approach with a one-group pre-test post-test experimental design was adopted. Thirty school children were selected using a non-probability convenience sampling technique. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing knowledge on causes, transmission, symptoms, prevention, and control of vector-borne diseases. The findings revealed that before the intervention, 47% of children had inadequate knowledge, 40% had moderately adequate knowledge, and only 13% had adequate knowledge. Following the structured teaching programme, 77% of participants demonstrated adequate knowledge and 23% showed moderately adequate knowledge. The mean post-test score (14.5±2.99) was significantly higher than the pre-test score (6.9±2.94), with a paired t-value of 25.515 (p<0.05), indicating that the structured teaching programme was highly effective in improving knowledge regarding prevention of vector-borne diseases among school children.
