STRESS AND COPING STRATEGIES AMONG HIGHER SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN THENI DISTRICT

ABSTRACT
Stress among adolescents has become a growing concern in the field of education, particularly at the higher secondary level where students face intense academic pressure, parental expectations, and competitive environments. This study titled “Stress and Coping Strategies among Higher Secondary School Students in Theni District” aims to assess the levels, sources, and effects of stress experienced by students as well as the coping mechanisms they adopt. A descriptive survey research design was employed, and data were collected from higher secondary students using a standardized Stress Assessment Scale and Coping Strategies Inventory.
The findings reveal that academic pressure, examination fear, future career uncertainty, and peer influence are the major contributors to student stress in Theni District. The study also identifies common coping strategies such as problem-focused coping, seeking social support, emotion-focused coping, and avoidance behaviours. Results indicate that students who adopt positive coping strategies, such as time management, relaxation techniques, and seeking guidance, tend to report lower stress levels compared to those who rely on avoidance or negative coping strategies.
This research highlights the need for schools, teachers, and parents to provide supportive environments and structured interventions to help students manage stress effectively. The study recommends implementing counseling services, stress-management workshops, and life-skills education programmes to promote healthy coping among higher secondary students in Theni District.
