A Study of Women Roles in Select Indian Regional Novels in English Translation after 1950

Abstract
Feminist literary criticism provides a crucial lens for analyzing gender roles, power dynamics, and the representation of women in literature through English translation. This theoretical approach is particularly relevant to the study of regional Indian novels, many of which deal explicitly with issues of gender and women's experiences in patriarchal societies. (Shaikh, 2026) This study analyzes five selected translated regional novels, which represent five different states such as 1) The First Promise (Bengali) 2) Tamas (Hindi) 3) Samaskara (Kannada) 4) Naalukettu (Malayalam) 5) On a Wing and a Prayer (Assamese) providing tools to examine how they engage with issues of gender, how they represent women's experiences, and how they contribute to a broader discussions about gender roles and women's rights in Indian society.
