Abstract: The paper seeks to explore the manifestation of the mother-daughter archetype and the rape-trauma archetype in the short story ‘The Stigma’ written by Pratibha Ray, translated from Odia by K. K. Mahapatra et al. Basing its premises on the analytical methods propounded by archetypal theorists Annis Pratt and Estella Lauter it traces the movement of the archetype over time and attempts to make explicit the concerns of the dialectic generated in the narrative. It is also seeks to record the unique resolution at the “hem-line” of expression embedded within the narrative of the short story. The study aims to discover the “tendencies of the archetype to tactically divert at some point to give vent to feminist messages” even though the text may be conservative.
