A Pilot Study of Gender Differences in AI Perception and Anxiety

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly becoming a part of everyone’s daily life. However, potential gender differences in perceptions and attitudes toward AI remain underexplored. This pilot study investigates whether statistically significant gender differences exist in perceptions of AI among male and female participants.
Data was collected using an online survey with 20 Likert-scale items. A total of 65 participants were recruited through online platforms. Basic Statistics were used to analyse the data, including the Welch’s independent samples t-test. Similar levels of AI usage were reported among male and female participants. However, female participants reported higher levels of AI anxiety, greater agreement with statements suggesting that AI products are intimidating, and stronger perceptions of gender bias in AI systems.
However, given a relatively small and gender imbalanced sample, the results must be treated as exploratory and preliminary. Further research with large and balanced sample must been conducted in order to come at confirmed conclusions.
