Digital Harassment and Online Violence Against Women Journalists: Emerging Threats in the Digital Age

The rapid expansion of digital communication technologies has transformed journalism worldwide. Social media platforms, digital newsrooms, and online communication channels have created unprecedented opportunities for journalists to gather information, engage audiences, and participate in public discourse. However, these developments have also generated new forms of harassment and violence targeting journalists, particularly women. Online violence against women journalists has emerged as a significant global challenge, threatening freedom of expression, press freedom, and gender equality. This study examines the nature, forms, causes, and consequences of digital harassment directed at women journalists. Drawing upon contemporary literature, international reports, and documented case studies, the paper explores how online abuse operates through misogyny, political polarization, coordinated disinformation campaigns, cyberstalking, doxxing, and technology-facilitated gender-based violence. The study further investigates the psychological, professional, and democratic implications of online attacks and evaluates existing legal and institutional responses. Findings indicate that online violence is not merely a virtual phenomenon but frequently translates into offline threats, self-censorship, psychological distress, and restrictions on journalistic freedom. UNESCO and ICFJ studies report that nearly 73% of women journalists surveyed experienced online violence, highlighting the widespread nature of the problem. The paper concludes with recommendations for governments, media organizations, technology companies, and civil society organizations to create safer digital environments for women journalists.
