Stigma to social support: case study of Dr Shahid badr falahi
This qualitative case study investigates the socio-psychological dynamics of systemic stigma, attitudinal change, and community reintegration through the lens of Dr. Shahid Badr Falahi’s life and legal trajectory. Arrested under severe national security charges and subsequently acquitted of all accusations by a Delhi court in 2015, Dr.Falahi’s life presents a unique narrative of resilience and community reintegration; it offers a profound framework for analyzing cognitive restructuring in social environments. This paper analyzes how the community navigated the friction between media-driven negative schemas and the reality of his judicial innocence.Utilizing Leon Festinger’s Cognitive Dissonance Theory and Tajfel’s Social Identity Theory, this paper examines the psychological tension experienced by the community when legal acquittal conflicted with media-induced negative schemas. Through content analysis and narrative synthesis, the study explores how the subject's role as a Unani medical practitioner facilitated a shift from public compliance with institutional stigma to private acceptance and robust social support. The findings highlight the power of grassroots credibility and ingroup protective factors in dismantling deeply ingrained societal biases.
