Abstract

ABSTRACT The escalating production and commercial integration of engineered nanomaterials have driven the urgent need to evaluate their environmental life cycle. This study evaluates the fundamental synthesis methods and physicochemical properties of nanoparticles, assessing how these parameters dictate their environmental dispersion and ecological accumulation. Special emphasis is placed on surface chemistry, which governs how these particles interact with sediments and natural organic matter in aquatic ecosystems. Investigating these interactions is vital for tracking nanomaterials to their final sink and identifying vulnerable biological receptors. A key focus of the discussion will relate to the surface chemistry of the nanoparticle, which may interact with a range of molecules naturally present in surface waters and sediments. Understanding these factors is a core goal required for understanding the final fate of nanomaterials and predicting which organisms are likely to be exposed to these materials.
