Abstract

Caste remains one of the most enduring social realities in India, shaping identities, opportunities, and power relations. Contemporary Indian English literature has emerged as a significant platform for representing caste-based discrimination, resistance, and social transformation. Unlike earlier literary works that often treated caste as a peripheral concern, contemporary writers place caste at the center of their narratives, highlighting the lived experiences of marginalized communities and challenging dominant social structures. Through the works of writers such as Arundhati Roy, Meena Kandasamy, Rohinton Mistry, Aravind Adiga, and Sujatha Gidla, contemporary literature exposes structural inequalities while foregrounding Dalit voices and subaltern experiences. This article examines the evolving representation of caste in contemporary Indian English literature and argues that literary texts function as powerful instruments of social critique and resistance.
