ASSESSMENT OF COMPETENCY AND ITS DETERMINANTS AMONG AGRICULTURAL GRADUATES: A PATH ANALYSIS APPROACH

In the evolving agricultural landscape, it is essential that agricultural graduates should possess the necessary knowledge, skill and adaptive abilities to address emerging challenges. This study evaluates the competency levels of agricultural graduates from Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya (IGKV), Raipur, Chhattisgarh, focusing on their theoretical knowledge and practical skills across key agricultural disciplines. Adopting a descriptive-exploratory design, data were collected from 714 graduates across three academic sessions (2020–2023) through structured interviews and questionnaires. Competency was assessed using a custom-developed scale that combined knowledge and skill indices for each subject. The results revealed an average Knowledge Index of 65.14%, a low Skill Index of 36.62% and an overall Competency Index of 50.88%, reflecting moderate performance. Agricultural graduates showed the highest competency in Agronomy, Soil Science and Genetics & Plant Breeding whereas the lowest in Agricultural Engineering and Statistics. Path analysis identified academic performance, quantitative aptitude, medium of education and computer literacy as significant factors influencing competency. The study highlights the need for curriculum reforms, enhanced practical training, and integration of digital skills to bridge the gap between academic preparation and industry requirements, promoting a more skilled and employable agri-professional workforce.
