Abstract : This article examines the conceptualisation and contemporary significance of indigenous identity in Latin America and India through a comparative anthropological perspective. It explores the historical evolution of the terms indio, indígena, and adivasi, highlighting the political, cultural, and social implications associated with these categories. The article analyses the emergence of indigenist movements, the struggle for cultural recognition, and the changing discourse surrounding indigenous rights at both national and international levels. Particular attention is given to the role of international organisations such as the United Nations and the International Labour Organisation in redefining indigenous peoples as subjects of collective rights rather than objects of assimilation. By comparing the experiences of indigenous communities in Mexico and India, the study demonstrates how issues of marginalisation, discrimination, land rights, cultural preservation, and political participation continue to shape indigenous realities in the twenty-first century. The article argues that despite differing historical trajectories, indigenous peoples in both regions have increasingly asserted their identities and demanded recognition, autonomy, and social justice within modern nation-states.
