Abstract
Hormones are essential biochemical messengers that regulate numerous physiological processes, including growth, metabolism, reproduction, and tissue repair. Among these functions, hair growth is a complex biological process significantly influenced by hormonal balance. Hair follicles undergo cyclic phases of growth (anagen), regression (catagen), and resting (telogen), all of which are controlled by endocrine signaling. Hormones such as androgens, estrogens, thyroid hormones, growth hormone, insulin, cortisol, prolactin, and melatonin play vital roles in maintaining normal hair follicle function. Hormonal imbalance resulting from endocrine disorders, aging, stress, genetic predisposition, or metabolic diseases can disrupt the hair growth cycle, leading to conditions such as androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and diffuse hair thinning.
Recent advances in endocrinology and dermatology have improved the understanding of hormone-mediated mechanisms involved in hair follicle biology, enabling the development of targeted therapeutic approaches. Current treatment strategies include hormone replacement therapy for endocrine deficiencies, anti-androgen medications, topical agents such as minoxidil, oral therapies including finasteride and dutasteride, corticosteroids for autoimmune hair disorders, nutritional supplementation, and emerging regenerative therapies such as platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and stem cell-based interventions. The selection of treatment depends on the underlying hormonal cause, patient characteristics, disease severity, and potential adverse effects. Regular hormonal assessment and individualized treatment plans are essential to optimize clinical outcomes while minimizing complications. This review highlights the physiological role of hormones in human growth with particular emphasis on hair growth regulation. It also summarizes the Pathophysiology of hormone-related hair disorders, available diagnostic approaches, current pharmacological treatments, and emerging therapeutic options. A comprehensive understanding of hormonal regulation and evidence-based management strategies can contribute to improved patient care and support the development of more effective therapies for hormone-associated hair disorders in the future.
