Abstract

—Noise pollution is one of the most common yet least regulated environmental hazards facing modern cities. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), sustained exposure to sound pressure levels (SPL) exceeding 70 decibels increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, hearing loss, and cognitive impairment. Traditional noise monitoring relies on costly, stationary sound level meters (SLMs), which are not suitable for large and dynamic urban regions [3]. We present NoiseLogger, a crowdsourced mobile noise monitoring tool for Android devices that transforms typical smartphones into calibrated noise measurement instruments. The proposed system architecture consists of three tightly integrated subsystems: (1) a power-friendly Android foreground service that continuously collects SPL measurements at 44,100 Hz with a fixed cadence of 12 seconds; (2) a cloud backend based on PHP/MySQL that stores the collected data, analyzes persistent noise hotspots using spatial SQL aggregation, and serves results via a REST API; and (3) an interactive geospatial map rendered in a WebView using Leaflet.js and Turf.js to visualize spatiotemporal noise levels on a 30-meter hexagonal grid with per-cell equivalent continuous sound levels Leq, Lmax, L10, L90, and hourly Chart.js bar charts. A geofencing module sends real-time notifications to users when they enter serverdefined high-noise zones. An early rollout demonstrates that NoiseLogger is capable of capturing contextualised, geotagged temporal datasets without requiring dedicated hardware, while effectively targeting areas of consistent urban noise.
