Abstract
Hair is an important part of the human body that contributes significantly to appearance and
personality. Proper hair care is essential for maintaining healthy hair and scalp. Shampoos are among the most commonly used cosmetic products for cleansing hair and scalp. Conventional shampoos often contain synthetic surfactants and chemical additives that may cause scalp irritation, dryness, hair damage, and environmental concerns. Herbal shampoos have emerged as a natural alternative because they are formulated using plant-derived ingredients possessing cleansing, conditioning,
antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and hair-growth-promoting properties.
Herbal shampoos are prepared using medicinal plants such as amla, shikakai, reetha, neem, aloe vera, hibiscus, and bhringraj. These ingredients not only cleanse the hair but also nourish the scalp and improve overall hair health. The increasing awareness regarding natural products and sustainable cosmetics has significantly enhanced consumer preference for herbal shampoos. This review discusses the anatomy of hair, need for herbal shampoos, formulation ingredients,
preparation methods, evaluation parameters, advantages, limitations, and future prospects of herbal shampoo formulations.
