Outbreak Investigation of Acute Diarrheal Disease in a Rural Community, Madhya Pradesh, India

Diarrheal diseases remain a major public health burden in low- and middle-income countries, contributing significantly to childhood morbidity and mortality. In March 2025, a diarrheal outbreak was reported in a rural block of Madhya Pradesh, India. A total of 156 cases and 2 deaths were recorded within a 10-day period. Epidemiological investigation implicated contaminated hand pump water as the source, with Vibrio cholerae O1 El Tor isolated from stool samples. Attack rates were highest among children under five years of age (22%). Immediate interventions included chlorination of water sources, distribution of oral rehydration solution (ORS) and zinc tablets, and community health education. This case study underscores the importance of robust surveillance systems, rapid outbreak response, and long-term infrastructural improvements in water and sanitation to prevent recurrence of waterborne disease outbreaks.
