Rapid urbanization in Indian cities has significantly intensified the Urban Heat Island (UHI) effect, a phenomenon where urban areas experience higher temperatures than their rural surroundings due to the replacement of natural landscapes with heat-retaining materials like concrete and asphalt. While Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) is a pivotal strategy for sustainable mobility, its implementation can drive substantial Land Use and Land Cover (LULC) transformations that inadvertently exacerbate local warming. This research presents a comparative study of the established Delhi Metro and the emerging Indore Metro corridors to evaluate the impact of transit-induced densification on microclimatic conditions.
To balance transit growth with climate resilience, the research advocates for mandatory 30–40% green cover, high-albedo materials, and water-sensitive urban design. These results provide a strategic framework for mitigating UHI effects in rapidly developing Indian transit corridors.
