Abstract
For the treatment of sewage water, aqueous extract of Ocimum sanctumLinn. leaves was used and various physico-chemical parameters (pH, temperature, total alkalinity, total hardness, total dissolved solids, electrical conductivity, chloride, sulphate, phosphate, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD)) of raw sewage were analyzed as well as their phytochemical components were examined to observe the effect of leaf extract on sewage wastewater treatment. The wastewater treated with 10 ml of extract shown a greater decrease in all above mentioned parameters after incubation of five days. So, it isconcluded that the leaf extract of O.sanctumcan be used to treat sewage water treatment in the near future as this study was demonstrated by a notable reduction of these pollution-detecting indices of the sewage effluent.
