Sacred urbanism is often seen through symbolism, history, and form. However, its identity is also deeply connected to sensory experience. “Sensory DNA of Sacred Urbanism: Defining Urban Identity through Multisensory Experience in Varanasi” introduces the idea of “sensory DNA” as an architectural framework to understand the unique character of a sacred city. Just like biological DNA defines the identity of the human body, sensory DNA includes the organized multisensory experiences found in architectural spaces that together form urban identity. The study investigates how tangible elements of the built environment and intangible cultural practices interact to structure multisensory experiences that reinforce sacred meaning It emphasizes aspects like sensory experiences based on 5 main senses, scale, enclosure, and movement patterns that influence perception within the sacred urban landscape. The findings show that sensory experience acts as a code that structures hierarchy, ritual movement, and shared memory in the city and how can one define a space solely by the sensory experiences. Rather than being in a minor detailing, multisensory experience deals with the combinations and overlapping of senses that gives a place its identity. This places sensory perception as an essential aspect for understanding and designing meaningful urban spaces.
