RELEVANCE OF GANDHIAN PHILOSOPHY IN TWENTY-FIRST CENTURY INDIAN ENGLISH LITERATURE

Gandhian philosophy, founded upon the principles of truth (Satya), non-violence (Ahimsa), self-reliance (Swaraj), social justice, and ethical humanism, continues to exert a significant influence on Indian socio-cultural discourse in the twenty-first century. Although contemporary India faces challenges arising from globalization, consumerism, environmental degradation, communal tensions, and widening socio-economic disparities, Gandhian ideals remain remarkably relevant in addressing these concerns. Indian English literature of the twenty-first century reflects this enduring relevance by engaging with themes of social equality, ecological consciousness, moral responsibility, peaceful resistance, and the empowerment of marginalized communities. Contemporary writers revisit Gandhian thought not merely as a historical legacy but as a living ethical framework capable of responding to modern crises.
This paper examines the manifestation of Gandhian philosophy in selected works of twenty-first-century Indian English literature. It explores how contemporary authors reinterpret Gandhian ideals in relation to issues such as environmental sustainability, social justice, identity politics, caste discrimination, gender inequality, and globalization. The study argues that while the narrative strategies and socio-political contexts of contemporary literature differ significantly from those of Gandhi's era, the fundamental concerns of human dignity, compassion, non-violence, and collective welfare continue to resonate. Through a critical analysis of representative literary texts and theoretical perspectives, the paper demonstrates that Gandhian philosophy remains a vital intellectual and ethical resource in contemporary literary discourse. The continued engagement with Gandhian values in Indian English literature underscores their adaptability and significance in fostering a more humane, inclusive, and sustainable society in the twenty-first century.
