EMERGING PARADIGMS IN BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION: A REVIEW OF GLOBAL TRENDS AND PRACTICES

Biodiversity conservation has moved from species listing and reserve designation toward a more strategic science of priority-setting, resilience and governance. This paper reviews major conceptual and practical developments that have shaped contemporary biodiversity thinking, including hotspot theory, wilderness conservation, multi-scale diversity measurement and rapid biodiversity assessment. Using a qualitative synthesis of foundational literature, the review organizes these ideas into a global framework and then interprets their significance through selected case snapshots from the Amazon basin, Costa Rica, coral reef systems and urban biodiversity planning. The analysis shows that current conservation practice is increasingly defined by four trends: spatial prioritization, landscape connectivity, community participation and integration with sustainability planning. Rather than treating biodiversity protection as a separate environmental task, emerging practice links it to climate adaptation, ecosystem services, public policy and development strategy. The paper argues that the most durable conservation responses are those that combine ecological science, social legitimacy and long-term institutional support.
