VOICES OF THE VOICELESS: NEGOTIATING DALIT CONSCIOUSNESS AND TRIBAL IDENTITY IN CONTEMPORARY INDIA

The concepts of Dalit consciousness and tribal identity occupy a significant place in contemporary Indian literary and cultural studies. Both represent the voices of historically marginalized communities that have experienced social exclusion, economic deprivation, and cultural discrimination. While Dalit consciousness emerged as a response to caste-based oppression and untouchability, tribal identity developed through struggles related to land alienation, cultural preservation, displacement, and indigenous rights. This research paper undertakes a comparative analysis of Dalit consciousness and tribal identity with special reference to Santali society and literature. Drawing upon postcolonial and subaltern perspectives, the study examines the historical background, literary representations, gender dimensions, educational challenges, and contemporary realities of these communities. The paper argues that literature functions as a powerful medium of resistance, self-representation, and social transformation. Through autobiographies, poetry, fiction, and oral narratives, Dalit and tribal writers have challenged dominant narratives and asserted their identities. The study concludes that greater academic engagement with marginalized literatures can contribute to a more inclusive understanding of Indian society and strengthen democratic values of equality, dignity, and justice.
