CENTRALIZED AND LINEAR COURTYARDS IN CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURE
Passive cooling, spatial organization, thermal comfort, daylighting, ventilation, social interaction, centralised courtyard, linear courtyard.
The utilization of courtyards in architecture has resulted in the creation of climatic and social spaces that enhance the built environment. Contemporary architecture increasingly employs centralized and linear courtyards as sustainable design elements, which improve both environmental performance and the spatial experience. This paper compares and analyses the impact of these two courtyard typologies on modern architectural design.
This study focuses on the planning principles, spatial arrangement, environmental benefits, and social functions of centralized and linear courtyards. The central open space in centralized courtyards promotes privacy, spatial coherence, and passive thermal regulation. Rather than that, linear courtyards function as extended open areas that promote better circulation, visual continuity and cross ventilation. Their performance in daylighting, ventilation, thermal comfort, and user interaction is further examined in the research.
