Framed by the Feed: How Social Media Layouts Twist the Emotional Weight of Journalism in Instagram Photojournalism

This paper offers a critical analysis of the Instagram "grid" as a transformative architectural force in contemporary photojournalism. As news consumption migrates to social media platforms, the structural logic of the 3x3 profile layout has superseded the traditional singular image as the primary unit of visual meaning. We examine how this "grid logic" acts as a secondary framing device, modulating emotional resonance through the curation of color, rhythm, and sequence. While the grid allows for a multi-layered narrative approach that can foster deep emotional proximity between the spectator and distant crises, it simultaneously imposes an "aesthetic imperative." This paper argues that the pressure for visual cohesion risks the commodification of human suffering, where the "Instagrammable" quality of a news event begins to dictate its journalistic value. By synthesizing theories of visual framing, affective labor, and digital architecture, this analysis explores how the rules of empathy are being rewritten by the interface of the smartphone.
