AI-Driven Workforce Transformation and Emerging Managerial Competencies in India

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative and agentic AI, is transforming the architecture of work, the design of jobs and the nature of managerial competence. In India, the transformation is intensified by the simultaneous growth of digital infrastructure, a large technology services ecosystem, rapid enterprise adoption, a substantial skill gap and national policy initiatives such as the IndiaAI Mission. This paper examines AI-driven workforce transformation in India with a specific focus on emerging managerial competencies. Drawing upon contemporary literature, official policy documents, industry reports and conceptual analysis, the paper argues that AI changes the managerial role in three interrelated ways: first, by automating routine coordination and reporting; second, by augmenting decision-making through data-rich, predictive and generative systems; and third, by creating new accountability demands around ethics, trust, explainability and human-AI collaboration. The study develops an integrated conceptual framework linking AI adoption, task redesign, workforce transformation, competency renewal and organizational outcomes. It also presents selected statistical indicators, comparative charts and tables to clarify the scale and direction of AI-led change in India. The paper concludes that Indian managers must move beyond digital familiarity toward AI fluency, strategic sensemaking, talent reskilling, algorithmic accountability, change leadership and responsible innovation. The study contributes to the future-of-work literature by positioning managerial competencies as the decisive bridge between AI investment and sustainable organizational performance.
