Abstract: Plastic pollution has emerged as a major environmental concern affecting aquatic ecosystems worldwide. Among various synthetic polymers, Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is extensively used in industrial, domestic, medical, and agricultural applications due to its durability and low production cost. However, improper disposal of PVC waste leads to accumulation in freshwater ecosystems where it exerts toxicological effects on aquatic organisms. The present review investigates the toxicological impact of PVC and PVC-derived microplastics on freshwater animals including fishes, crustaceans, molluscs, amphibians, and zooplankton. Various studies demonstrate that PVC particles and associated additives such as phthalates, vinyl chloride monomers, heavy metals, and stabilizers induce oxidative stress, histopathological alterations, behavioural abnormalities, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, and mortality in aquatic organisms (Rochman et al., 2013; Lithner et al., 2011). Experimental observations reveal that PVC exposure significantly affects feeding behaviour, respiration, growth, enzymatic activity, and immune responses in freshwater fauna. Bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of PVC-associated contaminants further increase ecological risks in aquatic food chains. The study highlights the urgent need for effective plastic waste management, environmental monitoring, and sustainable alternatives to reduce PVC contamination in freshwater ecosystems.
