Evaluating Agile Methodology as a Catalyst for Digital Banking Transformation: A Comparative Case Study of ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and State Bank of India

The Indian banking sector has undergone significant digital transformation over the past decade, driven by technological advancements, changing customer expectations, and increasing competition from financial technology firms. To remain competitive and responsive, leading banks have increasingly adopted agile methodologies to enhance innovation, accelerate product development, and improve customer experiences. This study examines the adoption of agile methodology in three major Indian banks ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank, and State Bank of India (SBI) using secondary data obtained from annual reports, research articles, industry reports, and published case studies. The study explores the role of agile practices in supporting digital banking transformation and compares the approaches adopted by these banks. Findings reveal that agile methodologies have facilitated faster deployment of digital products, improved collaboration among teams, enhanced customer-centric innovation, and strengthened organizational adaptability. ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank have demonstrated greater agility in implementing digital initiatives, while SBI has utilized agile principles to modernize operations and expand digital banking services through the YONO platform. The study concludes that agile methodology plays a crucial role in enabling successful digital transformation in the banking sector and provides strategic recommendations for banks seeking to strengthen their competitive position in the digital era.
