Abstract

Nanoemulgel is an advanced topical drug delivery system developed by incorporating nanoemulsion into a gel base to improve the therapeutic efficacy of lipophilic drugs. A large number of newly developed drug molecules exhibit poor aqueous solubility, low bioavailability, and variable absorption, which limit their clinical effectiveness through conventional dosage forms. Nanoemulgel overcomes these limitations by combining the advantages of nanoemulsion, such as enhanced drug solubilization, improved skin permeation, and controlled release, with the favorable rheological properties of gels, including better spread ability, patient compliance, and prolonged retention at the site of application. The presence of nanosized droplets increases the surface area for absorption and facilitates penetration through the stratum corneum barrier. Nanoemulgel formulations generally contain oils, surfactants, co-surfactants, gelling agents, preservatives, antioxidants, and permeation enhancers. They are widely used for topical delivery of antifungal, anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and cosmetic agents. Various evaluation parameters such as particle size, viscosity, pH, drug content, in-vitro permeation, stability studies, and morphology are used to characterize the formulation. Due to its improved stability, controlled drug release, and enhanced patient acceptability, nanoemulgel has emerged as a promising carrier system for topical and transdermal drug delivery
