Value Added Courses In Higher Education In Manipur Under NEP 2020: Challenges and Perspectives

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 is a landmark document which was approved by the Union Cabinet on 30th July, 2020. The first NEP was formulated in 1968 which was subsequently modified in 1986, 1992,2014, 2016 and 2019 etc.[5] After a gap of 34 years, the NEP was reformulated and the latest version contains many salient features. NEP 2020 is based on five main features viz, accessibility, equity, quality, affordability and accountability. The policy is aimed bringing large scale transformational changes in both school education and higher education. This is a significant step in the country's educational landscape, emphasising holistic learning, critical thinking and skill development. Among its key features is the introduction of Value-Added Courses (VACs) - non core subjects intended to enhance students' skill and employability [1]. These courses aim to build holistic, multidisciplinary individuals equipped for the dynamic demands of the 21st century. The courses are supplementary programs alongside core academic curricula. The main purpose is to enhance students' capabilities beyond theoretical knowledge, incorporating practical, industry-relevant, and soft skills. The state of Manipur is undergoing one of the implementing State to introduce NEP 2020 which was issued of its ordinance by the Manipur University since July, 2021. The ordinance facilitated the Value-Added Courses in 8 schemes in different trait skills upto 5th Semester in undergraduate level. Now, the program is undergoing the level of 6th Semester under NEP 2020 in the HEls in Manipur with the aim of providing students' developing entrepreneurial skill and self-employment. However, the successful implementation of VACs courses are facing several issues and challenges where lack of physical infrastructure and technical infrastructure in the HEls in Manipur. This paper explores to underscore the collaborative efforts with the concern government, experts, HEls, stake holders, and local communities to ensure the success of Value-Added Courses in the state of Manipur.[3,4,7,8]
