Abstract

This study investigates the pharmacognostic nature and therapeutic potential of Trigonella foenum-graecum (fenugreek) seeds towards Malassezia globosa, one of the chief causes of dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. A pharmacognostic examination revealed it possessed typical macroscopic and microscopic features including rhomboidal yellowish-brown colored seeds which contained a seed-coat, an endosperm containing mucilage and a characteristic embryo structure. The physicochemical parameters such as ash values, extractive values and moisture content were acceptable (quality and stability). Phytochemical screening was done to ascertain the presence of bioactive compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins and tannins that have been known to have antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. The agar well diffusion, disc diffusion and minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) methods were used to test the seed extracts and it was found that the seed extracts were very effective in inhibiting the growth of the fungi. The extracts were not as active as the conventional antifungal agents, but they demonstrated good potential with safer topical uses. Low cytotoxicity, low skin irritation and positive safety profile were also determined through toxicological studies. In general, the current research project introduces the fenugreek seeds as a potential alternative herb to treat fungal skin diseases that may address the current gap between pharmacognosy and dermatological interventions and contribute to the development of antifungal preparations of plant origin.
