Chemistry learning at the senior secondary level is often hindered by the abstract nature of concepts, symbolic representations, and persistent student misconceptions. The present study examines the effectiveness of the storytelling method as a pedagogical intervention to enhance conceptual understanding in chemistry. Grounded in constructivist learning theory, the study employed an experimental pre-test–post-test design on a sample of 30 identified slow learners selected from a pool of 100 students through a diagnostic test.
Storytelling-based remedial instruction was implemented over four weeks, integrating narrative contexts, analogies, and concept sequencing. The results revealed statistically significant improvements across three domains: Application and Problem Solving (Mean: 6.07 to 10.07; t = 21.28), and Critical Thinking (Mean: 6.17 to 10.00; t = 20.77). The findings demonstrate that storytelling facilitates meaningful learning by contextualizing abstract chemical concepts, thereby improving retention, engagement, and cognitive processing.
The study concludes that storytelling is an effective learner-centered strategy that can significantly enhance chemistry understanding at the senior secondary level.
