Cement mortar is an essential construction material widely used in masonry and plastering works. However, the extensive use of Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) leads to high carbon dioxide emissions and environmental concerns. To address this issue, supplementary cementitious materials such as Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS) and Silica Fume are used as partial replacements for cement.
In this study, cement mortar mixes were prepared by replacing cement with varying percentages of GGBS (10%–30%) and Silica Fume (0–5%). The specimens were cast, cured, and tested for workability, compressive strength, and durability properties.
The results showed that silica fumes significantly improve early-age strength due to their high pozzolanic activity, while GGBS enhances long-term strength and durability. The combined use of GGBS and silica fume produced a dense microstructure with reduced permeability and improved resistance to chemical attack.
Thus, the partial replacement of cement with GGBS and silica fume is an effective and sustainable approach for improving the performance of cement mortar.
