Abstract

: Morphometric analysis provides a quantitative framework for understanding the geomorphological and hydrological characteristics of drainage basins. The present study focuses on the morphometric evaluation of a watershed in the Pennar Basin using geospatial techniques. A Digital Elevation Model (DEM) integrated with Geographic Information System (GIS) tools was utilized to delineate the watershed boundary and extract the drainage network for detailed analysis. The study encompasses the evaluation of linear, areal, and relief morphometric parameters. Linear aspects such as stream order, stream length, bifurcation ratio, and mean stream length were analysed to understand the hierarchical organization and branching pattern of streams. Areal parameters including drainage density, stream frequency, form factor, elongation ratio, and circularity ratio were computed to assess basin shape, runoff potential, and infiltration characteristics. Relief parameters such as basin relief, relief ratio, and ruggedness number were estimated to evaluate terrain conditions and erosion susceptibility. The results indicate a predominantly dendritic drainage pattern, reflecting homogeneous lithological conditions and minimal structural influence. The bifurcation ratio suggests moderate structural control, while drainage density and stream frequency indicate moderate runoff and infiltration capacity. Basin shape parameters reveal an elongated watershed, which has implications for peak flow and flood response. Relief characteristics indicate moderate terrain steepness, suggesting balanced geomorphic processes. Overall, the morphometric characteristics of the watershed provide valuable insights into its hydrological behaviour and erosion dynamics. The study highlights the effectiveness of GIS-based morphometric analysis as a reliable tool for watershed management and planning. The findings can aid in the formulation of appropriate soil and water conservation measures within the Pennar Basin.
