Exploring the contribution of Indian authors in producing Literature in English in Pre-Independence Era: A critical perspective

Before independence India started its career of producing literature in English. The Indian English literature creates a remarkable space in world literature. At a time, it is believed that literature in English is basically Eurocentric but as the time passes, Indian English literature establishes its own identity. Producing literatures in English in India happened due to the political, social and cultural encounter with the west. In around 19th century, the western thought and literature were responded by the educated Indians. Besides the colonial temperament the Britishers established the world of literature in a fruitful way. The concept ‘Englishness’ spread out globally. Apart from the British literary canon, from ancient past, India introduced itself as the centre of cultural diversity. Irrespective of caste, creed and religions, all were living amicably in India with their native culture and identity. So many Indian authors from different geographical locations produced their literary identity in pre-independence scenario. They focused the Indian society and culture through the language ‘English’ and acknowledge the ‘Indianness’ to the world. The authors emerged with their different genres of literature like verse, prose, novel etc. in Indian context. The authors placed themselves in writing verse for the first time. This paper highlights the contribution of Indian authors in exploring the society and literature in English through which Indian identity is accredited in pre-independence India.
