Akarkara, botanically identified as Anacyclus pyrethrum (commonly called Pellitory root), is a well-known medicinal plant in Ayurveda, Unani, and traditional medicine systems. It is valued for its wide range of pharmacological and therapeutic activities. Traditionally, Aakarkara has been used as a nerve tonic, aphrodisiac, immunomodulator, and remedy for oral ailments. The root contains bioactive compounds such as alkylamides, sesquiterpenes, and flavonoids, which contribute to its stimulant, adaptogenic, antimicrobial, and anti- inflammatory effects. Recent pharmacological studies have validated its role in improving male fertility, enhancing memory, reducing oxidative stress, and providing relief in conditions like toothache, paralysis, and rheumatism. Its application in novel drug delivery systems and herbal formulations highlights its growing significance in modern therapeutics. This review emphasizes the ethnomedicinal uses, phytochemistry, pharmacological properties, and therapeutic potential of Akarkara, providing a scientific basis for its future development in herbal drug research.
