Alzheimer is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that is slowly progressing into memory, ability to think and behavior. It is among the major causes of dementia in the world and becomes a major challenge to the health care systems and society. these pathological alterations interfere with the communication between brain cells that cause damage to neurons and subsequent brain shrinkage.
Thus, the recent studies have been aimed at the creation of new therapeutic methods which could address the causes of the Alzheimer disease.
These therapies are used to delay the progression of the disease particularly when used early in the disease. Likewise, anti-tau medicines are under manufacture to prevent tau protein aggregation and stabilize the microtubules structures in the neurons. Tau pathology is strongly correlated with the severity of the disease, so future treatment should be focused on targeting tau. The other important strategy is aimed at minimizing neuroinflammation. The chronic inflammation in Alzheimer disease is caused by the overactivation of microglial cells, and this also causes neuron damage
Biotechnology has also come up with new approaches such as gene therapy and stem cell therapy. Gene therapy is expected to alter or control the genes that are linked to the risk of Alzheimer whereas stem cell therapy has the potential to replace the damaged neurons and recover the lost brain functions. It is still being researched but these methods have a promise of being used to find a lasting solution. Moreover, the drug delivery systems using nanotechnology are under investigation as a solution to the problem of the blood-brain barrier. [1]
