Impact of Economic Instability on Retirement Planning Decisions in India

Economic volatility greatly affects the financial choices of people in the long term especially retirement-oriented plans of people. Inflation, uncertainty about income and market volatility and the rising expenses in healthcare are some of the factors in India that have escalated concerns about the post-retirement financial security. This paper will discuss how economic instability will affect the decision of those who plan their retirement in India and the extent that financial literacy and professional financial advice would help in these situations.
The study follows descriptive and analytical methods and is founded on both primary and secondary data. A convenience sampling method was adopted to administer the structured questionnaire to the respondents (n=54) using which primary data was obtained. The data was interpreted by use of percentage analysis. The results suggest that most of the respondents believe the current economic climate to be volatile thus impacting negatively on their capability to save regularly to enable them to retire. Other influences of job insecurity and inflation became significant aspects that affected the decision to retire. Another major revelation of the study is the choice of safe investment and focus on short-term financial objectives in times of economic uncertainty.
In addition, professional financial advice and financial literacy was observed to have a positive impact on retirement planning decisions. The study emphasizes that there should be better financial education and favourable economic policies that will increase the retirement preparedness
